6 tools, free ones first

Each one opens the tool's own site. Free tools cost nothing; freemium tools show some results free and charge for the rest. Licensed PI items need a licensed investigator.

What to expect

What you can find for free

  • Registrations, officers and registered agents across states
  • Public-company filings with the SEC
  • Nonprofit tax returns (990s), including officer pay
  • Trademark filings with owner names and addresses
  • Federal lawsuits naming the business, and BBB complaints

Where free tools stop

LLCs can hide their owners behind a registered agent, and many states don't list members. Finding out who's really behind a company, plus its liens, judgments and reputation, is a due diligence report from a licensed investigator.

Tips

  • Search the registered agent's address too. Shell companies often share one.
  • For the most current filing, check the Secretary of State's site in the state where the company was formed.
