What to expect
What you can find for free
- Registrar, creation date and expiry date from ICANN's official lookup
- Other websites on the same server, and the servers the site has used before
- Subdomains, and the date the site got its first security certificate
- Shared analytics or ad IDs that tie several sites to one owner
- Who holds an IP address block, and abuse reports filed against it
Where free tools stop
Since 2018 most registrars hide the owner's name and contact details. Old WHOIS records sometimes show them, but WHOIS history and linked-domain maps are paid tools, and the registrar's own records usually take a subpoena.
Tips
- Check the creation date first. A company that claims 20 years in business on a domain registered last month is a red flag.
- Look up the site's Google Analytics or AdSense ID in BuiltWith to find its sister sites.
