7 tools, free ones first

Each one opens the tool's own site. Free tools cost nothing; freemium tools show some results free and charge for the rest. Licensed PI items need a licensed investigator.

What to expect

What you can find for free

  • Data breaches the address appears in. Breach dates show roughly how old the account is
  • A linked Google account, sometimes with a name, photo and public Maps reviews
  • Sites where the address is registered, using open-source tools like Holehe
  • Who registered the domain, for addresses on a company or custom domain
  • The real sending server, from a message's full headers

Where free tools stop

Email providers don't reveal who opened an account or where it's used from. That takes a subpoena or court order. Account discovery across hundreds of sites, documented for court, is work for a licensed investigator.

Tips

  • Paste the full headers of a suspicious email into MXToolbox to see the real sending server and spot spoofing.
  • An address with no breaches at all is often brand new, which is common for scam accounts.
