What to expect
What you can find for free
- Other copies of the photo and the oldest one online, which exposes stolen profile pictures
- The spot a photo was taken, mapped straight from its embedded GPS with Pic2Map or GeoImgr
- Camera, date and other metadata from the file
- Signs that a photo was edited
- Stills from a video that you can reverse-search
Where free tools stop
Face search engines can find other photos of the same person, but they carry real stalking risk, so they're listed here as work for a licensed investigator. Note that most social sites strip the GPS and metadata from photos when people upload them.
Tips
- To map where a photo was taken, upload the original file to Pic2Map. If it was posted to Instagram, X or Facebook, the GPS is almost always gone, so work from a file sent by text, email or a cloud link.
- Romance scammers often use photos of real models or service members. Search every photo on the profile, not just the first.
- Try more than one engine. Yandex is often strongest for places, and TinEye for finding the original.
