Check a professional license
Before you hand over money or your health, check the license. These free national registries cover brokers, investment advisers, mortgage lenders, health care providers, nurses, pilots and radio operators.
Picked and checked by a licensed private investigator. Updated October 2026.
7 tools, free ones first
Each one opens the tool's own site. Free tools cost nothing; freemium tools show some results free and charge for the rest. Licensed PI items need a licensed investigator.

What to expect
What you can find for free
- Brokers and investment advisers, with disciplinary history
- Mortgage companies and loan officers
- Health care providers and their practice addresses
- Nurse licenses from participating state boards
- Pilot certificates and FCC radio licenses
Where free tools stop
Most licenses, including contractors, lawyers and doctors' medical licenses, are issued by each state, so check those on the state licensing board's site. To check a private investigator, use our licensing body finder.
Tips
- BrokerCheck shows complaints, arbitrations and disciplinary actions, not just whether a license is active.
- An investment adviser who isn't in SEC IAPD or BrokerCheck is a major red flag.
