Property records and assets

Find who owns a property, what it sold for and what it looked like years ago, using county assessor and recorder sites and historical aerial photos.

Picked and checked by a licensed private investigator. Updated October 2026.

5 tools, free ones first

Each one opens the tool's own site. Free tools cost nothing; freemium tools show some results free and charge for the rest. Licensed PI items need a licensed investigator.

What to expect

What you can find for free

  • Owner name, assessed value and tax status from the county assessor
  • Deeds and mortgages from the county recorder, where they're online
  • Sale history and old listing photos
  • Historical aerial photos that show how a property changed

Where free tools stop

Property records are kept county by county, and there's no free nationwide search. A nationwide asset search covering real estate, vehicles, vessels, aircraft and business interests is work for a licensed investigator.

Tips

  • Start with NETR Online. Pick the state and county, and it links straight to that county's assessor, recorder and GIS map.
  • In Google Earth Pro, the clock button shows older aerial photos of the same spot.
